how do i add weight to make my swimbait to make it swim. Can i use split shots for weight or do i have to melt lead into it

Split shot will work fine on most lures. Place proper weight and fill in empty space with wood filler.

Try to keep your lead mostly in the front section of the swimbait and don't drill deeper than the center line of the lure so it will track better and not roll at higher speeds.

This is one way I test where and the amount of weight Iíll need on a new lure.
On a finished lure with no weight, make sure you take all the steps that you are going to use on your finished lure. I found this out the hard way. Some clear coats will make the bait more buoyant. I take a finishing nail and add the weight so I can add more or move the position on the bait. Iím guessing this could be a problem on a swim bait with the drag from the weight suspend below the body. But it should get you in the ball park. After youíre done moving the weight around, drill and add the weight and fill with 2ton epoxy for final testing. I put my bait in a vice with laminate flooring with padding between the bait and vice so I can pound in the lead.
