Finding the center of cedar block

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am working with 7/8" X 7/8"X 2.5" wood blocks and am having trouble putting a centerline on the block to mark for eye holes. When I drill my eye hold they are always a little off. I am using a drill press and clamps so I think the problem is me.

Part of this is due to my eye problems and part of it is me being green with woodworking.

Does anyone have any tricks or tips on getting a centerline down the length of the block?

When I finally do get one close to perfect I would like to make a jig or template out of Plexi-glass (or something) to repeat the locations.

Thanks in advance.

Dan

This is not an original idea, in fact, I am sure it has been documented on TU in the past.

Make a base plate with a pointed pin. I use 18mm ply wood and a sharpened 3mm dia brass rod for the pin. Make the plate size so that it can be comfortably clamped to the drill press plate/shelf, mine is about 8
