Bubbled topcoat

5 posts in this topic

I have been making some topwater lures out of the white foamy looking lure bodies you can get from Hagens, Janns, etc.

Some of these bodies are a little prous, and even though I prime them, then paint them, when I put on the topcoat it seems like the bodies have small air pockets trapped in the porous areas and this leaves bubbles in my topcoat. Typically a second coat will fill in the bubbles and all looks OK, but I am waondering if there is something I can do to seal the bodies before I start painting and thus won't have to topcoat twice. Any advice?

You can put on a sealer coat of thinned epoxy to seal the small holes. Either way you will have to put on more epoxy so you dont have to put more coats on the final coat.

If your making top water baits, weight maybe a issue...a lighter method of fixing the pin holes is to dip it in Polyacrilic (Minwax makes a good one)It will take 2-3 dips but that should seal the holes for you..Nathan

+1

It works for porous AZEK decking, too.

Yep, what Nathan said. One other thing.........

Are you sure they are bubbles or are they bare spots? If they are bare spots you might be contaminating the surface with oils from your fingers. Try not to touch the lure with anything but latex gloves after you prime.
