I have been looking around my local hardware stores & lumber yards and I can't find any places that have poplar. Where would I be able to find wood at and what would be the best size to start out with to make a trout swimbait? Thanks in advance.

I've seen at my local Lowes. You can always try eBay ... shipping might be $$$

I have found it at both Lowes and Home Depot. Both have it in strips and boards but it is usually only 3/4 inch thick, finished on all four sides. If you have a lumber mill nearby they usually have scraps in thicker dimensions and will give them to you. Check the moisture content before using.

I bough the poplar dowels I use on my rat baits at Lowe's.
They have sizes up to 1.5" I think.
Perfect size for a 5.5" long jointed rat body.
Depending on the shape you want for your trout, these might be an option.
