Basswood Pre-paint Prep?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I just started making some plugs from Basswood. I have a few ready to paint and was wondering should I prep the wood for painting. I guess what I mean is should I seal it with something, then paint then apply another clear sealer. I wasn't for sure if I could apply paint without a base. Thanks

If you want your bait to look nice and smooth, it has to have a smooth waterproof coating before you paint. You should prep basswood to seal/waterproof it, or when water based paint hits the raw wood, it will raise the grain and you'll have rough areas on your bait. Even some solvent products can raise the grain but you can sand them down and apply a second coat to get a nice smooth base before you start shooting paint. I use epoxy thinned with lacquer thinner or propionate dissolved in acetone because they are not only waterproof but also very durable - but other coatings will work.
