Husky Posted February 16, 2004 Report Share Posted February 16, 2004 Has anyone used Fiberglass resin as a topcoat for plugs? I applied some on some scrap wood and the result was an even and durable finish. I want to try using a bit less activator in an attempt to keep the resin flowing longer and to avoid a build up on smaller lures. At $9 a Qt., it's a heck of alot cheaper than using Devcon. It's all about the end results but one must keep quality as a first consideration. I'm still experimenting, but hopefully this forum will accelerate the process. woodsac Posted February 16, 2004 Report Share Posted February 16, 2004 From the soft plastic side, I wouldn't recommend it. It cures fast and it's cheap, but it's also fragile. Regardless of the cure rate and amount of catalyst added to the mixture, you can easily gouge it with any pointed object. Also, I have yet to have a fiberglass resin cure crystal clear, and I've tried about 6 different brands. I'm sure it would work, but it wouldn't hold up in the long run might ruin your finish, and one good rock shot could be all she wrote. COLOR ME FISHIN Posted February 16, 2004 Report Share Posted February 16, 2004 TRIED IT ON A COUPLE OF BAITS-DRIES SO FAST IT SEPARATES OFF THE BAIT. ALSO DRIES TO A TACKY FINISH. USE EPOXY. I HAVE DONE SOME GELCOAT REPAIR ON BOATS AND I HAVE TO SEAL THE RESIN WITH PLASTIC OR PVA TO ELIMINATE THE TACKINESS. NOT A GOOD CHOICE FOR WHAT WE AE DOING.
