Turn A Hand Steer Motor Into A Side Console Steer?

Recommended Posts

Hey there everyone, I was curious if any of you had ever CHEAPLY Converted a motor that you just steer with your hand into one that you use a console with a steering wheel? I've been trying to think of some ways to do it and have come up with some ideas, but not much else that doesn't involve an Hydraulic Cylinder and cables which would cost a lot, Any ideas or has anyone ever done a conversion like this? Thanks a lot everyone.

Try a pulley/cable system. You can see how they work on some of the old classic boat sites. Very simple to build from cheap hardware store parts and a gokart steering wheel.

Depends on the horse power of the motor. I have tried the cable and pully system and found it to be a little on the sloppy side for my application. I would recommend you go to a boat junk yard and take the rack and penion type steering system out of a boat. Check for needed length of cable first. Musky Glenn

I just joined this site today, but i have an old (58?) Aeroboat 12 footer that has the cable steering system that I am taking out along with the aluminum bow cover that it mounts to. There is a third seat in the bow under the aluminum cover and I need the room more than I need the steering system. Are you located near Corunna,Michigan?
