General Discussion - What Makes The Wobble?

Rookie,

That's funny, because I heard it was your misplaced ballast that was killing the action. Of your lure, I mean.

Dave great stuff! That is a heck of a machine. Thanks

Rookie I fell out of my chair! I can't believe you said the "Holly Crap Batman" I said the exact same thing earlier when I read it. Do you have any lucky lottery numbers? :P

LKN4........ Have you tried a squarer edged lip yet? I have found that I get a little more thump with those types of lips.

Here is one that I been having issues with. I did this body thinking it may work for trout and salmon. I took some mahogany and ran the line loop and hook tie as one piece. I coated it one time with epoxy on its way to three final coats. I always test the lures between every coat. I went out and casted it and about fell over. It has the craziest action that I have ever seen. I have no weighting in the body. I stopped the other two epoxy coats and just finished it with automotive finish. I have tried to make three other bodies with no success. I also tried to upscale the body size for muskies. Just not the same action as the original. I am trying to figure out how the wobble works with this one. Does anyone have any ideas to try a new approach? I want to figure out how to do the "you tube" thing to show the action. I am working on that.

Thanks

John

HOLY CRAP BATMAN MY BRAIN IS ON FIRE!!!

Can you say CRAP on here?

ITS NOT DEAR ABBY. It's not DEAR ABU not ABBY.

Dear Dave, Do not call me Dear!!!

I have been married for 16 years. Most of the 16 years have been wonderful but lately things aren't always as good as they should be. Some days are better than others. But I believe it could be due to a lack of friction and weight displacement in the relationship.

I find it very commendable that your loyalty to the same lure has lasted 16 years. Usually the relationship hits the rocks and has left you long before now. I suspect that you have swallowed your pride a few times and gone in after her. Again, this shows loyalty. Why not give her a new pretty dress and a top coat, it will make her happy, look good and she won’t leak so much. Don’t forget the underwear, this should help her performance.

I always thought it was my lack of interest as the years have passed by or maybe it was my wifes...but now I know & this explains it all.... The fact is.. My wife is just too darn hard to move because of misplaced weight in the middle the rather than her nose and TAIL!!! Looks like I need to find a way to adjust this displacement to get the kind of action with less resists in my life.

I think in this case, you should forget about the weight displacement and concentrate on the wobble. Every lure is different, you must find the qualities that attracted you to her in the first place, they are still there, you just have to look a bit harder. Just because she is a bit worn and water logged, no need to discard. All relationships just need a little effort.

Maybe you could work on your technique. Work on your twitch, sink and draw. If you just wind her in the same way every time, it gets boring. Don't just jerk her around, maybe pause occasionally and let her rise to the top. Walking the dog occasionally will score you a few extra too.

YOU DA MAN & THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!,

MR DISPLACEMENT GUY.

So glad I was able to help. Remember, stay away from shop bought lures. They often have a lot more problems than they are worth and you’ll end up having to talk to the lure doctor again.

Dave

Dave... thanks for all the insight you always provide and that macine is awesome!

I have a quick question tho. Going back to the answer for Ben's question... if the weight is at the folcrum then theoretically the bait would have more wobble due to inertia and the vortices carrying arround that point. Ok I got that, but lets say you put all the weight at one end of the stick....it would take more inertia to get it moving but the other end of the stick would have a more violent thump? Im just thinking that if I were to place my weight in between the tow eye and front hook eye then maybe I would get a harder tail thump with maybe a bit larger bill? Its ealy tho and I could be way off here. Probably gonna be a quick edit after I read this. LOL!!!

Ok just thinking out loud here. If I were to weight the bait like that then maybe it would throw off the balance point soo much that it would have a dulling effect on it?!?!? This would be due to the fact that it would just take too much inertia to get the bait moving. I think I am understanding all this but trying to wrap my head around it at 6 am isnt working out too swell. COFFEE need some more coffee!

I have written one reply to this question already this morning and it got really technical and messy. So now I am going to try again.

The simple answer is water resistance will slow the tail down. The stick test in air would not demonstrate the water resistance. Try it in the swimming pool.

I remember seeing a video of a Japanese lure with an adjustable balance, such that you could move the weights around and see the effect. I am sure it is here on TU, but I failed to find it. Maybe one of you guys could find it and link it in this thread, it is definitely relevant.
