Top Water Plug/prop ?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys and gals, new to the forum. Last winter I hand carved and hand painted a to water plug so I wouldn't go nuts throughout the hard water season. I put a prop on the back but it sticks to the body at slow speed retrieves. I've trid leaving more space between the prop, as well as placing a small cup or bead between the body but that hasn't helped. She still catches fish, but I'd love to figure out how to get the prop to spin at low speed retrieves. Here's a few pic's of the plug and the fish she's caught.

Thanks in advance for your advice.;)

Sorry, I tried to delete the fish pics once I realized they aren't allowed in this section, but it was to late.

I'm guessing some kind of a bearing system, like a metal cup, that would reduce the contact surface between the prop and the lure body, is what you need, but I don't have a clue what to use.

Nice fish!

Not an easy fix. When I wanted easy spinning props, I press fitted the props onto aluminum rivets sold to make buzzbaits. Worked nicely. The props will spin with the bait sitting still in a mild current. But finding the right size wire and prop blades with the right size center holes is not a snap, and I don't remember what sizes I used (they were "medium size"). I bought several size props and kept trying them until I found a combo that fit together tightly. They were from lurepartsonline.com (formerly Stamina Tackle). The downside is that the rivet requires a little longer wire to ride on, so you will have added weight of wire plus the rivet on the end of the lure at the prop(s). Had I to do over again, I'm not sure I'd go to the trouble - but I was messin'. I've seen some high priced Japanese prop baits with very simple, very loose props ahead of a metal bead. They spin fine if you jerk hard, otherwise just sit there.

Have you tried straightening the prop out so it sticks out farther from the axis? It looks as if the prop is about the same size as the front of your lure and this could mean the prop wasn't getting a good "bite" in the water especially at the slower speeds your wanting. If you look at baits such as the Tiny Torpedo or Devils Horse the end of the props extend out pass the sides of the bait. You might solve this by going to a larger prop. Just a thought.

I had the same problem on a few baits and resorted to drilling out the hole in the prop blade and putting a stainless rivet head thru it I used a dremel to cut the rivet off a little and now the spin with the lightest twitch try this if you like I use it on some of my bream style props as well as my bagley bulgin B knockoff wakebait

@ Hoist-N-Hawgs

I also think , that the prop is a bit too small , the water current can't hit the blades well to get them to spin .

I did encounter the same problem as well with these shop-bought props , as the bearing surface of these is rather short(only the thickness of the sheet material) , so they often "edge" on their shaft , which prevents them from rotating well .

To overcome this problem , I've extended their center hole somewhat bigger and turned down a small bearing bush on my lathe , simply by filing some fitting round brass stock against the turning direction of the lathe , ..........the workpiece looks like a kinda rivet head later , the center bore must be done PRIOR to filing it to approbiate diameter , leaving a rivet head on one side .

I'd simply insert this bush into the extended prop's center bore and hit the thinner end of that bush with a hammer to kinda rivet it into the prop's bore , ........the center bore in the bush might deform a bit , but after having assembled the bush it can be re-drilled .

This way I have extentended the bearing length of the prop by multiple times and it can't "edge" on it's shaft anymore , ..........sadly this only works on medium and larger sized commercial props due to space reasons .

But to be honest , I prefer to cut my own style props out of 0,5 mm stainless steel sheet , these would have TWO aligned bearing bores(like a buzz-blade)and are dead sure to get to spin .

It's quite a finacky task making such props , often taking longer than shaping the entire lure blank , but in the end these are absolutely free of any hazzle and you can also try out a variety of different shapes .

In this video you can see one of my propbaits equipped with such homemade props :

good luck , .......greetz , diemai :yay:

Thanks , Mark , .......would you believe , that this patch is located only 15 minutes by car from the very heart of the city ?

greetz , Dieter :yay:

I remember, when I flew into Frankfurt, how amazed I was at the amount of green, wild looking areas in Germany in general, and so close to the city.

Here in SoCal we're in a desert, so it only gets green in the spring, after the rains, and there's nothing like what you have in your video.

I hope your water is available for a while longer. I know how you have specific seasons for different fish.

Take care,

Mark
