Ice Jigs

Recommended Posts

Ice is still two months away here in southern Michigan but I've already got the bug to start making some Ice jigs. My favorite and most productive In shallow water is the Arnold jig, A small teardrop with a #8 hook and two Triple 0 colorado blades attatched to the large eye of the hook, that flap up and down bouncing off the sides of the teardrop making a clacking noise. My problem making these is that I can't find a size 6 or 8 hook with a large enough eye to let the blades flap easily. Bending .035 wire into a loop and soldering next to the hook Is what I'm doing now but it's tough to do on these little jigs. Does anyone have a source for short shanked large eyed hooks in a small size or share your favorite jigs for perch fishing through the Ice.

hey wingnut,

we are in the process of designing some new ice jigs and these are exactly what we sould like to start producing. Wouldn't suppose I could get your recomendation on the hook style. Maybe a Mustad ref#?

I pitched the packages they came in and put them in a tackle tray but I'm almost positive they're mustad sproat hooks, large ringed eye, gold 3366G. Got them at janns, thats the largest eye hook they had in a size 8 or 6. Too small of an eye for what I need so I make a 1/8" to 3/16' loop with a shank long enough to fit the blade size I'm soldering to. Made a new version this year with a larger blade for deeper water with loops at both ends. The spinner blades flaping on top and the hook swinging free on the bottom. The sproat hook with the large eye seems to work fine for this.

Thanks for the help. I buy direct from MUSTAD and stock a bunch of there hooks but not this one. I'll have to get in my catalog and take a look. (Here's my plug....we have hooks on our site in 100 packs...just wouldn't be right if I didn't...lol)

Sounds like a cool looking jig...have any photos?

i have soldered up some of the same jig before.. i used the hooks that came with the swedish pimple, you know the extra hook has a huge eye designed for use with a split ring, they work freakin perfect and i never use them anyways.. but the only problem is that i only had 5 or so lol.. ill try and post pic of my handy work with it..i used the super small willow blades tho,and i powder coated white on the bottom, and pink on the tips.. the thought being that on the downward motion of the jig the white and pink would flash and then on the upward motion of the jig it would show the polished chrome backside..orange,pink and white all are "super" glow powder paint...

if you find out what hooks work best please help me out man.. i would also be willing to split a large order from janns if anyone is interested..

sorry for the huge pics.. this is the first time i have posted any pics
