You might try some stuff called "Liquid Frisket". I've bought some at my local Hobby Lobby. It's sort of a liquid rubber type of stuff that you can apply to areas that you want to keep clean. After application it dries to a rubbery texture that can be easily peeled off when your done. You can do an online search for it and read up on it's uses.
