Crank Popping

Recommended Posts

Ok, I am sure some of you have had a bass bust on a floating crankbait just sitting there. Well, use a floating crankbait as a topwater can be a good technique. Whether or not the ability to fish it back to the boat/bank as a crankbait afterwards is a benefit or not is still in question for me. I have a couple thoughts though. Why not design a crankbait for this application. Set the curve of the nose slightly above the waterline so it splashes a little more. Give it a more angled bill like a deeper diver so it backs up more on surfacing. Give it more of a minnow or pencil popper overall profile to match what bass are feeding on usually when hitting topwater.

It would still need to be very bouyant to work for the application.

I know. I know. There are crankbaits that work for crank popping now, but why not make it better.

P.S. I have taken a guy fishing once or twice who didn't have any poppers and I only had one or two in the boat, and they didn't have any. I showed them crank popping and sometimes the technique outfished regular topwaters and usually produced equally well.

I discovered this in Canada a couple years ago. My buddy doesn't fish much and backlashes a lot. Several times one evening he caught some nice smallies while picking out a birds nest. I started letting my crank set for a minute or so and started catching some big ones. Funny thing was they wouldn't touch a popper or walking bait and the bait had to be dead still. Because of the way we found this technique I dubbed it Dumb sh-tting.
