Bending Wire

Recommended Posts

I'm having trouble bending some thick steel wire for my true wires. I'm used to bending 0,6 to 0,8 mm wire but I wanted to try some bigger baits and tried 1,0 mm wire. It's really hard to get a nice and close bend at the eyes. It get more like a horizontal U shape in stead of something like an -o

I tried heating it up and bending it, it worked, but the wire gets really fragile and breaks when I try to bend it. Do you guys know any tricks?

Julle,

I'm no wire bender. I think you might get some help if you post this on the wire bait forum also.

Put up some pics of what you are getting, it will make it easier to offer a solution.

The reason I ask is that I have some 1mm SS wire here and I can maybe see what the problem is and find a solution for you. It may be that you have the wrong type of wire.

Well after some fiddling I manage to get the wire quiet close together, I used 3 pliers and brute force. It's still not what i'm aiming for but it's alright

in the image the top one is what i'm aiming for and the bottom one is what I was getting. With thinner wire i'm able to bend it nicely but this is just so strong.

There are several different grades of wire. Some being harder, softer, acid resistant, etc. depending on what it's to be used for. It sounds like the wire your using isn't a soft temper. The soft temper wire is much easier to bend and form wire through harnesses with and still remain plenty strong.

It could be a tad softer yeah, but I can't find anything like that around here, or it has to be something like gardening wire, which is way to soft :P

I am not seeing any pics. Could be my system, but refresh did not bring anything up.

The grade of wire that you are looking for is 304 or 304L. There is a filler wire used for welding which is 308, this is a tad softer, but still good for lures. 316 is another usable SS wire, but is slightly harder, it has more chrome content for the food industry. 304 is the commonly available SS wire.

I don't do through wire on my baits, so I had to do a little experimenting. The tight bend that you are looking for, I do not think is achievable without specialist tools, nor do I think it is necessary.

I made a quick pin block, with removable pins (3mm diameter). I did not use any forming tools, only a pair of snub nose pliers to pinch the loops behind the pin. Here are my results and I am happy with them:

I think my wire is just to hard, If I do that, it just springs back a little, I can never get it that tight.

Yes, the wire does spring back a little, but I found a technique to fix that. It is not a secret, I just couldn't think of a way to explain it. Here is a short video to show how I fix that problem.

Do a few practice loops, varying where you grip with the pliers. You will soon get the hang of it.
