Salt

Recommended Posts

Please correct my if I am wrong, but from what I have read on here you can use normal everyday table salt if you grind it down in a coffee grinder... Seems like that would be the cheapest and most economical way to go... *TubeJig* :)

Table salt has additives in it such as iodine which you don't want. Just use coarse salt; which 100% pure, and grind that up. That's the cheapest way to go.

Popcorn salt can also have additives in it like butter flavouring which can add color to the bait(yellowish).

I buy sea salt with no iodine added and put it in the blender if I'm out. Usually just buy ultra fine salt from Bear.

I only JUST did my first salt baits a couple weeks ago, and I used non iodized table salt in the one pound paper can. It worked fine except that I had to stir constantly to suspend it. My understanding was that the fine ground salt suspended better and was more dense overall sitting in the cup and therefore you needed less salt by volume. (not by weight)

If you are going to grind or flour your salt, you can go to any feed store. I believe that is the least expensive way to go.

I get mine at the grocery store; is that the "feed" store you're talking about Richard?

Does that type of salt help the bait remain translucent? The floured salt definitely changes the color clarity.

It really doesn't matter where you get the salt. The finer you grind it, the more opaque the bait will be. It's the crystals that reflectt/refract light. Grind up those crystals and that will no longer happen. The baits might tear up a little easier but I personally like a translucent bait. Also, if you flour your salt, then the only flake that will be seen is what is on the outside of the bait.

Nova, I knew you were joking,
