If the wire is there I tape a nylon cord to it as I pull it out then tie and tape the new cord on the nylon and pull it back through. If there is a chance you will ever want something else in there, pull 2 nylon cords at the same time and leave one.

The other option is to buy a fish tape and use it.

look for a wire tie holding the wire if there is more then one wire going thru the hole chances are thay are wire tied together most boat builders do it that way to save time,i worked at a marina for almost ten years after retiring from the coast guard,BEEN THERE DONE THAT!!! run the new wire with a fish tape its faster then trying to pull the old wire out and if you pull on the old wire you might break another wire tied to it

crankpaint after looking at it I found that there is a chase running down the side thats attached with screws, when I get to the side panel that the gear shift is mounted on is there any thing I need to watch out for when removing this panel?
