Does anyone know what type of wood is used in the Roman made "mother" swimbait?

Its made from a japanese cypress. I imagine it to be a fairly dense wood perhaps similar to maple or oak. If you try to make a bait that large out of a light wood like poplar your going to have to put a TON of lead in it to get it to sink. Mahogany might work well too. The key is weighting and getting the joint setup right. Good luck.
