I'm considering a purchase of this mold, and was wondering if those new fangled wire collars are an improvement over the standard cast collars?

I like that myself, I think it does have an advantage over a cast keeper if you are looking at fishing this using a grub or other plastic in a hopping or lift and drop type presentation. The reason I say that is a cast collar like on a poison tail kind of makes it like a hidden weight type of bait and when it falls straight down the bait is sitting at kind of a 70 degree angle were as that head all the weight is at the fron and the bait will be at a vertical or 90 degrees as it falls. Just that little difference can mean a lot, I bet if you are using the same plastic grub and a similar shaped head in the same weight with the difference being one has a collar and barb while the other has a keeper wire, the one with the keeper wire is going to fall faster. The bigger sizes on that jig would be great with a 5" Kalins lunker grub on it. If you like using a jighead to present plastics then this is one to look at, I'm even thinking about it now and I just got a new mold for Christmas...This hobby is going to break me.

I now tie my skirts with wire, and double over the tag twist wire to make an additional keeper on the belly of my jigs.
