Is there a site or source to shop for aftermarket spools that are lighter than the stock spools?
The spools on my old Chronarch MG50's are so light, it makes throwing small stuff a breeze, and I'd like to see if I can improve the light bait performance of some of my other reels.
Maybe it's not possible, but I'd like to try.

Mark, I think most of the hotrod spools available are from Japanese Domestic Market shops that import them to the U.S. for enthusiasts. Check the enthusiast forum at tackletour.com for some sources. I bet you'll be gobsmacked at the prices they charge!

BTW - what's this about an "OLD" Chronarch 50MG? That ain't old! My 1970 era Abu ProMax reels are old! My Chronarch 50MG is still a baby!

How about taking a large drill bit, a drill press, an indexing wheel, and a jig or two for holding and lighten it in an afternoon (or two). Used to be able to buy "loose" bearings and some thinner oil just for long distance use.
Or you could do like I do and tie on a three ounce musky lure and then any reel will throw a mile (and backlash twice in the process).lol Musky Glenn

Here's a friend of mine you plays/upgrades with his reels. Maybe you just need to upgrade the bearings to Boca bearings

I used to use supertune my Curados and put Boca ceramic bearings in them and ran them dry. They were noisy but gave me longer casts.

Honestly, I can't see paying big bucks and many hours to hotrod or super-tune a reel. I get why guys do it but in practical terms, instead of being able to cast 10 ft further than the next guy, I'd just as soon troll 2 seconds longer and 10 ft closer to my target. An extra 10 ft casting distance is about all I'd be willing to concede to a super-tuner. My "stock" reels cast farther than the distance at which I can get a reliable hook set anyway. Ok, Ok, I know nobody said we have to keep everything practical.
