rgordon83 Posted March 18, 2013 Report Share Posted March 18, 2013 Hey Guys, First off, new member here. Been using this site as a great resource for planning the launch of a lure company! I wanted to ask for some feedback on spin casting vs. injection molding for producing soft plastics. What are the pros and cons of each? If our company is successful and we start cranking out large quantities, we will for sure be doing injection molding. But in looking for a more affordable option to get our product to market we came across spin casting. It seems like a possible alternative at least in the early days when we are testing products to see if they even sell. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks! CNC Molds N Stuff Posted March 18, 2013 Report Share Posted March 18, 2013 Spin casting produces a different type of product usually than injection molding, although when you start talking about casting and injecting the lines can blur in a few areas. This would be for soft plastics. We have already made prototypes by hand -injecting in silicone molds. But we want to do a run of about 10,000-20,000 individual baits to get us off the ground and test the market and whatnot and pouring them 1 (or even 5) at a time in our silicone molds is not an option at the moment for a few reasons so looking at other options. Thanks for the tip! Any idea what a mold like that would typically cost and how many cavities they typically have? Can you also produce lamnate molds that way? Frank Posted March 18, 2013 Report Share Posted March 18, 2013 You kinda left out some of the details as far as what you are making. But can tell you a round about price you will be looking at. Plan on say 500 for a design fee. Which might get you a prototype mold. Then about 80 or so per cavity. If you choose a company that sells mold on a site they might have a fee to keep it off the site. This just a rough idea and prices might change from one company to another. You should pick a time of the year when most are not slammed with work. And remember one thing this is a great way to make a really nice impression of quality work. I have a lot of customers that really like the quality look of the baits I can produce. If you have a mold made make sure you get all the bells and whistles in the mold you may want in the future.
