Try typing the number found on the bottom of the reel foot into the browser of your computer and do a search for it. Something like ("xxxxx....... for the number) then abu garcia reel. If you still can't find what you want email Abu Garcia and ask them if they have a schematic for your reel. They'll be able to identify it by the number on the bottom of the reel foot.

Usually it is the two break blocks that slide on the wire shaft. They get moved to the ends of the wire and won't go inside the spool. Slide them as close together as they will go and give it another try. The other thing that happens sometimes is the tension cap gets screwed on to far and won't let the spool axle go in far enough. Back the tension cap way off until you get the side screws attached. Hope this helps. Musky Glenn

Muskiestalker, The brakes work by rubbing on the ends when they slide out to hit the retaining ring they are set inside. There should be some clearance between the brake and the bottom of the race way.  The reel not turning makes me wonder if your reel has anti reverse gear or if it is the older style that has the anti reverse dog gear. If the handle will turn backwards some then check the dog gear to make sure it straddles the gear that activates anti reverse. This dog gear can be put in backwards and not work.  If it has the anti reverse ball bearing that won't allow the handle to turn backwards any, check all the stack of parts that are on the handle shaft, might have something there that isn't stacked correctly.

These are some of the easier reels to work on but they can be cranky once in a while. Keep us informed and we should be able to get you through it. Just don't force parts. Musky Glenn

ok went over everything on the crankside all the gears are working i made sure the pinion gear is turning when i turn the handle shaft. when i slide the side down to the spool i can see the brake blocks just on the edge ive pushed them in enough to go in but when i turn the handle the pinion gear isnt engaging the clutch washer that turns the spool everything feels really tight

I had trouble finding a schematic by that foot number. It looks like your reel doesn't have the black bar with the two springs, yours engages a different way I believe. It shows to have a dog gear for the anti reverse. Are you sure the two brass sides of it straddles the gear on the handle shaft. The dog gear sits on a pin on the round plate and can be hard to align with gear when you slide gears on the brass shaft. I usually fit it to the gear and as I slide the gear set onto the brass shaft, I make sure the dog gear is still on the gear as it goes onto the pin in the round plate. Any way you could post a few photo's of the problem and stack of gear parts. If you would rather, Send it to me and I will put it back if I can, no charge. Musky Glenn

I received your reel today and it turned into a head scratcher. You know that feeling when everything looks correct but it still doesn't work, well that was me this evening. The brake blocks were the problem of keeping the reel from closing. But like you said, when you got it closed the spool was very hard to turn. I went from end to end and finally traced it down to the spool. I found that by taking a spool out of one of my working reels and installing it into your reel. That cured the problem, but what was wrong with your spool? I thought that the bearings might be bad and locking it up under pressure. I found a used spool out of  4500 and took the bearings out of it. They were in bad shape so I didn't go that route. That reel did have a good brake block piece on it that was good. I replaced the sheet metal part that holds the two white brake blocks and that cured your problem. You can make out this part in your second photo in the middle. It is the piece holding the two white brake blocks. I probably could have just replaced the brake blocks but since that worked, leave well enough alone.

I will mail your reel back on Monday along with the bad brake block. Even after knowing what the problem was I still can't see what was wrong with it. Just one of those "could only happen to me deals". It should be good for many more fish. Good Luck, Musky Glenn
