Bat Jig

Recommended Posts

I ordered the new Do-it Bat Jig mold from Barlows last week and it arrived a couple days ago. Since then I've had some time to mess around with it a bit and I have to say I really like it a lot! I know it was designed as a crappie jig but I had visions of using it with my 2.5 inch swimbaits. I've been pouring these swimbaits for a couple years and I haven't found a jig head to use with them that I was happy with until now. I pour these swimbaits with very soft plastic so obviously durabily is going to be an issue. I needed to find a jig head that held the bait more securely. I've tried various heads with keepers that you can buy from big box stores and the only ones I could find that held the bait properly was either too heavy or the hook shank was too long that it impaired the action of the swimbait. Do-it says that the only hook that will fit this mold is the size 6 wacky hook. I've been making the wacky jigs for a while too and I have a bunch of the size 2 hooks. And it just so happens that the size 2 hook is the perfect size for my 2.5 inch swimbaits! It also turns out, that even though Do-it says it won't fit, the size 2 hooks do fit this mold. All you have to do is bend the gap of the hook slightly to get it to fit! The wire keeper for this mold is a bit on the small side which is understandable since it was designed for smaller crappie baits. To remidy this I have started to modify the mold to accept screw-locs. I think this is going to make this the ultimate jig head for smaller jig heads. I've also found it to be very simple to add a wire weed guard using the same ones for the wacky jig mold.

I got a chance to hit the water with the kayak this morning after breaking my way though the ice! The Bat jig is awesome! Especially with that little wire weedguard. it made its way through brush and garbage better than I expected. Its is the perfect rig for these small swimbaits.
