Flat Siders

Recommended Posts

Ever think about making molds that are injected but "look like" they were open poured?

When I offered baits for sale before I quit to just sell custom molds I had a few custom customers who were gungho for flat sided baits.  I made a few molds for that.  Basically just one half cut deeper than a normal injection mold, and the other side totally flat except for pin and screw holes.

I had one pro angler who came to me and asked to buy the molds for his favorites when I quit selling baits.  He was totally blown away when he discovered I was not pouring his baits, but injecting them.  It was worth it for me to make molds to do that, because it was so much faster and he would often order 500 or 1000 of the same color.

I noted a long time ago that depending on how you rig them (particularly flipping creature baits) that flat siders often had a little different action than baits that were roughly the same fully rounded.  Before I got into bait making I bought a bunch of flat sided beaver like baits from a guy who was a regular on the old ROFB newsgroup.  They did catch fish, but I don't know if I ever thought they were better.  Just different.  It did seem like if I got a pitch just right they would dart further back under trash.  That is pretty hard to measure objectively though.

Anyway, just something to think about.

Many I pour or poured for want the flat sides but that was what was wanted with custom baits at the time.   Guys wanted them flat because they did fish different.  It was a very technique specific clientele. Light line finesse guys appreciated the action and the glide given to these baits. The market for the most part has changed and in my opinion both int type of angler and what custom baits has become.  At one time you knew when contacted you had already sold the bait.  Price wasn't the determining factor it was you were making a product that was different in both function, texture, and colors.  It was truly a unique product sought after more by a "specialist".  Most of my orders were not what I consider the traditional bass angler.

Now baits wanted are more inline with the typical soft plastic offerings of the southern reservoirs.   Most that I am contacted by are more "Wal Mart" shoppers.  Price is king and essentially they are looking for a generic of a name brand bait.

Almost all of Robo's worms are flat sided, and they catch fish, and fishermen.

I like those little baits - probably the only production "hand pour" I still use...

Bob - I just made a mold for a friend that was originally a hand poured bait... but he wanted it made injection to get the legs/tails a bit thinner.... I actually wound up modelling in the "sinkhole" at the thickest point of the bait to replicate the deformation after it cooled as he was adamant the detail added to the lures action.  I'd bet there is alot of this type hybrid stuff going on as I'd assume anyone doing BIG quantities of a hand pour bait would think about making an injection replica as their production efficiency would/should increase significantly provided they don't need to hand pour to get color/patterns correct.

I've been looking for something like a Zoom Mag II since I started pouring. This is my go to worm and from what I can see there is not any molds out there like it. It's a flat sider with a very thin tail and narrow body. I am pretty sure it is not patented because Zoom usually puts the patent or patent pending number on the label if it is. Anyone know where I can get an injection or hand pour mold similar to the Mag II? Like it has been stated, it has a different action, especially when sinking, than round worms. Yes, I do buy several of the colors, but many of the colors I use to use have been discontinued.
