Fishing... Or Building?

Recommended Posts

We worked hard all week and Friday is almost upon us... Then for some comes the "week end"... Not all of my weeks end, but im sure some of yours do.... How do you spend them?... In your man cave or in your boat??...... Since i started making lures, my time on the water has diminished... Might sound sad to some, but my time in the "shop" is equally enjoyable to me!....... Just wondering how many suffer from the same dilemma??

I don't have weekends. Most of the time I have no idea what day it is. I have to keep an eye on the date, because I have to either visit immigration or leave the country on a VISA run on alternating months. Just got back from Singapore an hour ago.

Most of my time I am working on an electric car design. I am just finishing up a very cool lure for a customer that I cannot wait for you all to see. The job I did with Bob is done my end and I have a couple more lures that need starting.

I need to start work on the new duplicator machine design and the 12' x 4' x 2' test tank needs designing. I just flip between projects depending on what I fancy - the days don't matter.

Exactly why this "hobby" can become an "addiction," like it did for me........and ultimately the reason why I gave it up.  A couple years in and forget weekends, forget evenings, forget fishing, forget the wife and kids names, etc.  LOL  And there was never quite enough money coming in to give up the "day job."

Have fun with it, but don't let it devour you.  It can become very stressful at times.

Just put another 60-70 hrs in the fuel/oil/chemical truck behind me... Not much time or energy to tinker in the evenings, get every Sunday and every other Saturday off, so a project that would take most guys 3 or 4 days takes me 2 or 3 weeks... Still have alot of empty trays in my tackle box!.... I have gone fishing 5 times this year, but thats LOW for me!

Al... You mean you gave up selling?... Surely you still pour for yourself???

In the nasty, nasty Iowa winters, I'm lure making only. Once it gets warm, I try to balance.

Only been fishing once this year but in my defense, our weekends have been terrible. Constant rain. But on the plus side, I need a bigger tackle bag.

Since you mentioned rain, i had to share this...... Taken last weekend, 2 streets over from my house..... Its the end of a 5 year drought in north Texas!

...and of course the pic is sideways, as is every pic i upload for some reason...

Haven't poured a bait in 3 years, but I have enough made to last a lifetime.  LOL

I suffered from the same dilemma when i made custom crankbaits and repainted for others. I enjoyed it immensely but a lot of the fun went away. The fun turns into orders, orders turn into more orders, and pretty soon you have no time to fish because you are making baits for others to fish with.

I picked the airbrush up after a more than 7 year hiatus to see if i could do it again with the urging of my wife. No plans to sell, just fun. I don't even own a bass boat anymore, its turned into a pontoon....lol

Al, this is SpoRoller from the past. I forgot my log-in so i changed to my real name.

MarkS... Welcome back!... I havnt been around long, trying to get to know everyone, especially the long timers... Im kinda jealous of them, had i known about this hobby 20 years ago, i might be where they are............. But like you said, i might be burnt out on fulfilling needs of others..... Never the less, great community here!!!
