Bois d'Arc Posted May 18, 2015 Report Share Posted May 18, 2015 Lately I've noticed that lures finish coated with Eagle Supreme concrete sealer and stored in FTO 700 lure boxes are losing the finish coat where the lure contacts the lid of the box. There are several other lures of the same model in the box but coated with other sealers...(AC1315, Garco MCU, D2T) and none of them have this problem. The lures in question range in age from a year old to several months old, and have been fished at least one season. Observations: The box and lures have been on the deck of the boat in direct sunlight (not left out all day). The finish melts only where the lid touches the bait. There's no spot on the lid where the finish contacts the lid. I've attached photos of the problem. The blemish is at level eye on the upper back of both lures. The green pattern is just starting to show the blemish and the foiled lure is the end result. I have a few others at various stages of losing the finish coat in this fashion. Has anyone else seen this happen with Eagle finished lures? Not my intent to bash Eagle Supreme or anyone who uses it so please don't go there. Bois d'Arc Posted May 18, 2015 Author Report Share Posted May 18, 2015 Nathan, Appreciate the response...no there isn't any finish stuck to the lid of the FTO700 box..... very odd since the finish seems to be dissolving on the lure at the exact spot where it touches the lid of the box. No baits sticking together...normally I put two baits in the same slot and they do touch one another but none have stuck together. Going to put two lures I am sure have been finished with Eagle in the same slot and see if they stick together. Wondering if the heat plays a part in this...the summer heat in Texas can be brutal at times so I try not to leave lure boxes out in the sun for long. Interersting thing is the lures aren't sticking ....it seems like the finish is just melting away. The lures have been cured in a dehydrator for a few weeks before being put to use so the finish is dry. AC1315 that's been on a bait for months will melt if left in contact with plastisol for more that a day, so I know there are still reactions possible, even with cured baits. Good response....I'm thinkin' its something with the FTO box and Eagle Supreme. May have to toss all the sealers and go back to D2T or something like it. Like Mark suggests, there are work-arounds to stop the problem and if I were building solely for myself, that would be acceptable - but since I often gift crankbaits to other guys it's something I don't want happening. Jury is still out on Garco MCU but none of those lures have shown any issues yet. Thinkin' its the summer heat and some chemical reaction thats causing the Eagle to melt away. BobP Posted May 24, 2015 Report Share Posted May 24, 2015 I have some AC1315 and am trying it out occasionally to see how it goes. Hope springs eternal! But it has to climb a pretty big mountain to attain the durability status of either epoxy or MCU in my book. Both have their 'pain in the butt' features but once on the lure, I never have to worry about their performance. I stuff a bunch of crankbaits tightly in a plastic bait box and go fishing.
