Redfish/trout Jig Heads

Recommended Posts

Most any Jig Head will work   ... sizes 1, 1/0, 2/0  .. Either a regular Aberdeen or Forged hook.  Many different ones are used for this purpose  ..  I prefer the new Eagle claw Needle Point -Platinum Plated hooks  ..  Some are afraid that they may bend on a big red but have yet to have it to happen.

Note on Hooks:  the size should be in proper proportion to the "Dressing" Plastic Shape and design as well as Hair or Nylon.

1/8 and 1/4 with the 1/4 most popular depending on the situation and matter of presentation.

Hope this helps

Do you have a preference on a specific mold?...from experience I assume the plastic keeper/collar needs to be a good one, the rods we tend to use for this doesn't have enough backbone to straighten any hook esp. if you play them correctly, we catch giant redfish on fairly light wire small hooks so I wasn't too worried about the hook....just want an easy to pour mold that works!...thanks for your response

all the do -it molds I have seem to pour really good. Get a can of drop out and you shouldn't have Many problems. You'll have to experiment a little with any mold you get to figure out what works best for you. As far as a redfish jig head i would just look for one with a good bait keeper and I like the bigger hooks. Those reds are fun caught some today on spinnerbaits and a yellow magic while fishing for bass.

I have the drop out stuff, quite a few molds and a RCBS pro melter, I was just interested in which mold guys preferred, I  am leaning toward the do it mold with the bullet hed, and the multiple 1/8 and 1/4 cavitys but the hook sizes seem a tad small...idk and that's why I  asked first...thanks for the reponse
