Adding Length To The Butt

Recommended Posts

Many years ago I cut the butt of a flipping stick off. It was too long, or so I felt. After that, it was too short and unbalanced. Havn't picked up the rod since. I am just getting into rod building/repair and wanted to resurrect this rod.

How'd you guys add length (a few inches) to the butt? Weight is less of a concern at this point cause I can always add a balance kit. However, the length is an issue at it's very ackward trying to flip with a short handle.

Thanks in advance. and pics are always nice!

Here you go:  The link below is to a multi page PDF file that has the info you seek.  It should download a copy to you download directory.

That is a great read, and source!

I know that Phenix Rods used to use a wooden dowel to extend their rod butts.  I had a friend whose 20 year old rod came apart on a cast, and he was left holding just the butt end.  The rod, reel, and 1oz. spinnerbait had flown far out from our boat.

We were able to find it all the next week, dragging heavy spoons where it had been lost.

He cleaned up the reel, and reglued the dowel/butt section back into the rod, and he fishes that setup today.

As a carpenter, I can see how that could work.  They did their splice under the reel seat, but from the backside, instead of from the front of the reel seat, like the blank extensions in the PDF.  In both methods, the metal reel seats reinforce the joint, to prevent splitout.
