CNC Molds N Stuff
What can you deduce about graphite from this picture? Both weights shown were cast in the same cavity of the same mold. The lead was the same temperature for both.
smalljaw
What does graphite have to do with it?
Basseducer
The one on the right looks like it was poured at a slower flow rate. I don't know that graphite was a factor.
Salty's
It as a high expansion rate or at least looks like that in the picture. Those weights don't look the same. I'm assuming the smaller was poured first and the larger poured second.

CNC Molds N Stuff
They were both poured from a ladle as fast as they would pour. The mold was cool enough to handle both times.

CNC Molds N Stuff
Graphite mold?? No. Nothing so esoteric although glass is sometimes cast in graphite molds. I would not have known that except a lady who makes specialty marbles in graphite molds spent time telling me about it a few years ago when she bought some gas bottles from me. Vodkaman
One was a cold mold, the other after the mold was heated. The graphite contains some moisture, driven off after the first pour. Dave Edited October 3, 2015 by Vodkaman
Apdriver
The release agent a lot of us use is mostly graphite, from the looks of it. It does make the pour much easier most times and seems to make lead flow much easier. Just a guess....pour with ridges- no agent. Smooth pour with release agent. Vodkaman
Has to be moisture on the first pour. Dave
CNC Molds N Stuff
Has to be moisture on the first pour. Dave Could be I suppose, but I don't think so.
Vodkaman
Looking forward to your opinion. The moisture idea can of course be tested, by heating the graphite before application, to drive off any moisture or low flash point fractions. Yo Al
I can deduce that the cavity didn't fill and spraying with graphite made it fill completely. As to why I don't know. Does break it surface tension? Act as an insulating barrier to prevent lead freezing on contact? I never gave it any thought before.
CNC Molds N Stuff
One of those things encompasses my opinion. I think the graphite acts as an insulator allowing the lead to flow easily for an extra fraction of a second. FYI: There was almost 3 ounces difference in those two pieces.
