Injectors And Molds

Recommended Posts

I bought the Bass Tackle 6 oz. injector, because I am a hobby pourer, and this size is just right for pouring a few molds at a time.

The nozzle has a turn and release mechanism, so it doesn't p.o.p. off when I pour, but it's really easy to remove to clean.

I'm sure there are others that work fine, but this is the one I use and like.

Just a quick note I bought 3 different injectors from basstackle over the years and each one was supposed to be 5/8th,well they are but not any piece from one will interchange with the other, meaning the nozzles will not fit each other, small size differences, you would think they would be the same but they are not!

Nope, they aren't at all. The parts that fit to the barrel or tubing are built to fit that exact tube. I don't believe the tubing they are using is perfectly true (none is I don't believe) so they hone out each piece and then the plunger, nozzle etc all has to be fit to it.

I would call it more of a evolution. From the beginning they had tubes that were not true and varied a lot. So they honed them out to make the tolerances better but then all the parts were custom fit as Dave said. Now they back bore the tip of the tube so the tips are all the same. So now all the tips should be the same and the part that fits in to the molds should be just under 5/8" so it will fit easy. Don't want to tight of a fit there or it is miserable to move from mold to mold. The top cap has undergone a lengthening to help with a binding feel with the twinjector. That's. The reason they don't offer parts to make your own twinjector they are fit before they go out the door. I have many different injectors from them and like that they continue to improve on a great design. I was the one who came up with the locking pin design in the first place and they embraced it to become standard on all of there injectors. Learn and make it better is forward thinking at its finest.

I remember your post about that Frank.

Good people are good people, and you are obviously a good person.

Baitjunkys injector has a nice handle you can hold while injecting. U wont have to hold the injector and burn your hand.

Dude, that's why I gave you those gloves!  Hahaha

Actually, Bob La Londe gave me an injector he made years ago, and he had put some plumbing pipe insulation around it to insulate it.  I'm sure that would work for a bigger injector.  Just keep a gap between the nozzle and the insulation, so it doesn't go down into the hot plastic.

Bait Junkys is similar to the Basstackle which also is very good. Both are thick walled and have a locking tip which is why I reccomend it to beginners. The BJ has a handle as mentioned that i like.

I still find myself mainley using the Bears. I have conquered to tip falling off with experience but other dont like that.

i dont understand the need of a pilot diameter on the injector itself....why not just a full ball radius on the tip?  to many times my injector stuck in the molds and had to pull it out....do-it mold  basstackle injector ..I took the tip in the shop and turned .025 off the pilot diameter..works fine now...I would say not all molds are the same I had trouble with a bears mold sticking to....but I think the full radius tip would work better

Bob,

A small injector came with the mold (which I still pour).  Have you wondered where that injector has been all these years?

Hmmm... post a picture of it. I made a few injectors, but as far as I can recall I've only given away two of them.  I sent one of my 9.9oz to Jadon in Australia, because a couple of the molds I made for him were to big to fill with the 6oz he had, and I made a smaller one for Harold at Sportsmen's to go with the original Weird Bug I made for him.  The rest of my injectors are all accounted for on the shelf as far as I can recall.  Maybe I made two of those little ones like the one I gave to Harold.

I've never made injectors for sale because of the difficult consistency issues others have mentioned.  Even extruded tube is only close to the same if it comes from the same extruder at the mill.

To the OP.  Jacobs current injector is cross compatible, and most of his current molds will fill with a 5/8.  His older ones had a small sprue and would only fill with a cone tip.  Bears, Bass Tackle, Del-Mart, etc, etc all use a standard "5/8" except most make the cylinder slightly undersize for clearance.  The only recent exception that I am aware of is the Ultra Molds Shooting Star which was listed as having a 3/4 tip, but could be ordered with 5/8 on request.
