Hook Question

Recommended Posts

I use the duritin hooks a lot for saltwater. That was the main purpose for them, salt is not a hooks friend lol. Have not had issues with them. Use Mustad or Eagle claw.

I know people that WANT bronze hooks because if it gets swallowed and you have to cut the hook off, it will rust out and pass through faster doing less harm. Opinions vary.

I am a big fan of the Matzuo black chrome sickle hooks. Use them all the time fresh or saltwater. Have a lot of friends now that use only them also. Panfish, walleye and SMB.

I prefer black nickel as bronze do tend to rust out. BLT, if you like the Matzuo black chrome sickle hooks, try the Eagle Claw Black Platinum 500BP Lil Nasty, it is a sickle hook as well, and it is as sharp, if not sharper than the Matzuo but with stronger wire and out of more than 2000 hooks of varying sizes, not a single bad one.

You can buy all hooks by the 1000 count from Shorty's Hooks Sales out of Missouri. They have the best prices, you will need a tax ID number or pay 10% excise upfront. I also believe you can get them from Captain Hooks which is the online version of Shorty's.

Cad, don't have one of those tax numbers. CH's appear to be a nickel version. I give them a shout though.

Go to Captain hooks and look at jig hooks, then select Eagle Claw from the manufactures list on the drop down menu. Once you do that there will be like 7 pages or so of hooks, if you see "BP" next the hook it means it is a black platinum, if there is an "L" next to it means it is a laser sharp model. Some of the older black platinum models aren't listed as "BP" but all you need to do is read the description next to the model number and that will tell you if it is a black platinum or bronze, or duration hook. An example of laser sharp models is the EWG flipping hook, it is listed as "EL111BP", then the 60 degree flat eye standard wire hook, it is listed as "EL2798" but if you read the description they will tell you it is a black platinum model and the EL before it means it is a laser sharp model. I hope this helps.
