CNC Molds N Stuff Posted November 26, 2015 Report Share Posted November 26, 2015 (edited) Please Don't Blacken Thanksgiving I know everybody wants a deal, but please lets not take a day of thanks for those things we have and hold dear like friends and family and turn it into just another commercial day. While I personally would rather hang with friends and family on thanksgiving day there is another reason to save the sales madness for Black Friday. There are already plenty of people on the roads on Thanksgiving day and Thanksgiving evening. By having sales starting on the holiday it increases traffic. Worse because many people eat a lot and drink on the holiday there will be more people on the road who may be impaired or sleepy from all the food they ate. The sales will entice some people out on the road whose better judgement would ordinarily keep them off the road. I am sure some people will be judgmental about them, but the FACT is that they will be out there on a day they ordinarily wouldn't be. I am not trying to tell anybody what they should or should not do, but in our household we have decided not to shop sales Thanksgiving day. In addition we won't be going to any Black Fridays sales at stores who advertised Black Friday sales on Thursday. In fact we are preferentially setting aside only ads for those stores who advertised they were closed on Thanksgiving day. I would note: That we do appreciate those grocery stores who are open for the first half of the day for all of us who may have forgotten something to complete our Thanksgiving day feast. We just hope they close early enough to allow their employees to spend Thanksgiving at home with their families as well. People are crazy! I'd rather pay the extra 20 or 30 bucks than deal with that mess!!! Plus, if im getting up that early on my day off, im going to the lake not the store!!! But, to each their own!... diemai Posted November 30, 2015 Report Share Posted November 30, 2015 Just came across , ......and if I may chime in from across the Great Pond ,......not until last Wednesday or Thursday I had ever heard of Black Friday , ..but then there was an article on a local news site saying as much that sales are expected to increase for so and so many percent on Black Friday , ....off course refering to Germany !!! I mean , ....we do not celebrate Thanksgiving over here , as it is a genuine and pure American tradition , .....every country and every people have their own traditions , bank holidays and celebrations , and that's absolutely fine by me , ....but why the heck do we need a Black Friday over here as well ? And in fact,....it accidentally happened to be , that the missus felt like strolling a Hamburg shopping mall with me(she's never heard of Black Friday before as well) that particular Friday,...and as my eye was sharpened by the news site article , indeed I saw some advert signs there pointing out Black Friday sales ! It's just about pulling extra bucks out of our wallets , not more and not less ! Maybe in future local politicians stuck to the payrolls of commerce and economony would work on establishing Thanksgiving over here as well , as they had already managed to do with Halloween , also a genuine and pure American tradition(as far as I know , established by Irish immigrants). Just 25 years ago , not many people over here were familiar to Halloween , nowadays by early October every local supermaket does sell Halloween accessories of any kind , and also countless other local businesses and branches are jumping on that wagon ! I aggree to Bob's initial post , .......such national traditions should be kept well in terms of their REAL purpose and not fall victim to commerce entirely ,......and , ...in my own opinion , ....not taken to places , where they don't belong to ,.......just for business !!! It wasnt meant to be that way, and maybe it wasnt before, but it is now.... In the UK, there is a religious festival called harvest festival. It is a religious festival were we take food baskets to the church and it is distributed to the poor and needy. It was NEVER an opportunity for shopping sales, which is actually an insult to those people that harvest festival is for. Thanks giving and harvest festival are basically the same thing, a celebration of the gathering of a successful harvest. It is a crying shame that in modern times it has become purely a shopping frenzy and the whole point of the celebration has been bastardized by the greed of the commercial world. As usual, what goes on in USA always filters through to the UK, I find this embarrassing. Not because of what the USA chooses to do, I am fine with that, but because the UK has no self pride and feels that it must follow USA. Halloween is another USA tradition that has hit the UK shores; costume parties, trick or treat and all the rest. Halloween is a fun party, but still an embarrassment for the UK. But most likely only people, that are frequent church visitors anyway , are aware of that event ,...... otherwise it is rather unregarded by the wider population ,......on the other hand the best protection against commercializing ! And otherwise I could absolutely second to your post , ...I reckon , that one could switch "UK" in your post for names of a few other European countries without making any differences in the text's contents and sense . Now I don't even go to the mad rush sales on Black Friday. Way too many people doing too many stupid things. Ages ago (not all that long in old years but an eternity in modern years) I used to use inexpensive TVs as video monitors for surveillance systems. We would hit the door busters sales for 19" tubes at two or three stores and stock up for my contracting business. My wife and I would be back, and the TVs on the shelf in the shop before anybody else in the house even woke up. My customers were always floored at how I could provide 19" monitors for less than half what other companies were providing 10-12" monitors. I told the customer up front that it would probably only last a few years, but it was so much cheaper they would be money ahead just replacing them as needed. Most lasted 5 years in service 24/7 (name brands only). A few are still in service amazingly enough. Well more than a decade later. Most have been replaced with flat screens though. Kind of a necessity as systems get upgraded to HD over coax and multi megapixel IP over Cat5. I didnt see any fights, riots, police or trampled bodies back then.... Just no where to park outside and shoulder to shoulder crowding inside.... Like a rock concert with no music But now... Thanks to a generation of children raised without a belt... It has gotten out of hand...... When my niece and nephew were small, we used to get really good deals on toys, some 1/2 off. We used to always get up at 3:00 am on Black Friday and wait in line to get the deals.
