CNC Molds N Stuff
It seems that powder coating is the preferred finish for jigs and spinnerbaits, but I was recently working on a custom jig design a customer. They said they just dipped their jigs in vinyl paint and clear the eye after it dries with great results. Since all the little tweaks I was doing with their designs was about "special" features having good durability I wondered: Just how good is vinyl paint? Basseducer
Bob, It is pretty good stuff. The finish is tough. I don't have much experience dipping it as I sprayed it. It is thick and you have to thin it a lot for spraying.
smalljaw
What makes vinyl really good is that it will bend with the head, what I mean is that if you hit a bridge abutment casting your jig, if the head dents the vinyl will dent as well instead of cracking, I guess the right way to say it is that it is flexible. The bad thing is you need to use primer or base coat and the fumes can give you massive headaches. I used to use it and if it weren't for powder I would have quit making lures as it would give me terrible headaches even when working outside as the fumes were that nasty. dlaery
I have a friend that dips vinyl a lot. You have to dip in base coat, let it dry a little, then dip the color you want, let it dry, then some sort of clear coat/epoxy.you also have to learn how to keeps the drips off or you will have coneheads. Powder coating with a fluid bed usually just 1 dip, bake, your done. the white base coat makes the bright colors look a lot better in my opinion. My friend believes his vinyl is more chip resistant than the powder coated. I have sprayed a lot of vinyl and prefer the electro static better for speed and economics.but the electro static is not a walk in the park, it does have it issues. Powder coating 1 at a time with a fluid bed is not a bad way to paint jigs. I would rather do that than spray liquid vinyl because it takes me 3 steps, base coat, color, clear. I haven't had any complaints about the powder chipping if it is baked right. I think the vinyl liquid is a good product, its not walk in the park either. smalljaw
Almost forgot, dlaery is correct about the top coat, vinyl and soft plastic baits do not get along, you'll get some serious goo without a top coat.
toadfrog
well bob the guys pretty much laid it on the line for you . It is basically an application thing along with preference . That is to say jigs verses cranks . I use powder on metal and vinyl on cranks and plugs for toothy critters . I coat it with klass kote 2 part epoxy . Some I dip some I spray and spraying takes practice with the thinning . Definetly bad to breath in a lot of ways . Had the MSDS for it once . As I recall its next to nuclear . Think it may be why people say about me , that boy just ain't right .

Deuce 77
I have kind of a stupid question about the thinner for vinyl does it have to be specified vinyl thinner has anybody tried anything else. Vinyl thinner is expensive just looking for anything cheaper alternative.
