Painting Soft Plastic With Createx Paint Same As Used For Hard Baits

Recommended Posts

I been painting soft plastic with createx paint and then dipping them in clear. I also have the spike-it paint for plastic. I do not see the advantage of the spike-it paints does anyone have some knowledge of this subject, pros and cons ?

The createx is not smearing and when dipped the paint doesn't run or come off.

The argument is that Createx paints are stiffer and will crack under bending and even reduce bending.

BUT, if you are not heat setting the paint and successfully applying a clear dip and the bait flexes well, then why not. If it works for you then go for it. The life of a soft bait is not intended to be more than perhaps a few fish, so I do not see any other issues to stop you.

That is awesome, and happy it's working for you. I would like to see some of your work for sure, it sounds very interesting and opens up a whole new meaning of custom baits. I know from experience what can be done with hard baits and createx or similar paints, but if it allows you to custom paint soft baits and works it should be a game changer. That being said it would be awesome for a few custom creations but air brushing takes some time per and would not be cost effective per piece if you were trying to mass produce baits like normal. I did see some custom swim baits that were airbrushed at a trade show event and they were great? just trying to wrap my brain around how to utilize this technique on our semi mass produced custom soft plastics?

Very interesting to say the least, please continue to educate us.

Oh by the way! This is what makes this site so great, it's ideas and techniques that continue to open new doors for the custom bait makers and fisherman. I've been amazed at the ideas that have come from experimenting just like this, and have a close friend that is currently working with other options to color his soft plastics to make them more realistic so this would be right up his wheel house for life like, custom or out of the norm?

Thanks for sharing your experience, we appreciate it.

The difference is, the ONLY products that will actually adhere to the plastic are the SB Coat/VPI (same thing, one is airbrush ready) and the colure water based (Needs a clear dip or cleared with SB Coat/VPI, the solvent paints do not require coating) It does not matter what you do to it, the createx will NOT adhere to the plastic.

If it sticks to the bait long enough to dip it in clear then run with it.

Try this paint the back black and when you think it is dry pull it and see how the paint cracks and chips off. Even if it is under a plastic dip it will let go. Not to mention some plastic leaches out an oily product while in the bag and when that happens you paint will come off too. Unless it is real really light in color then it would be hard to see but it does not stick. Why does the cratex make painting a soft bait a game changer? There are some bait makers out there that do some pretty great work with the stuff on the market that is made for plastic.

Frank the reason I said it could be a game changer is, lots of guys are doing great work these days with createx on crank baits, and if this works as described it should open a whole new world for custom soft plstics. Can you imagine some of the paint jobs these guys will put on swimbaits, frogs etc.

I've never tried createx on soft plastics but have always had some reserve for some of the reasons stated in this thread, thus the reason I said it sounds very interesting, and I look forward to seeing some of this work.

I have seen up close some of the Swimbaits that have been airbrushed, then cleared again, but it was done with other paint, and they do look spectacular.

Thanks

I have yet to Post a video on this site but let me see if i can make a video to show my results. Let me lay down a few observations that i have thus far as this discussion is great.

1    I'm using baitJunkys Brand Plastisol degassed.

2    The Soft Plastic Swimbaits I used, have been sitting around for a month before I painted them.

3    Im using regular Createx Paint not wicked Line or Auto.

4    I sprayed the back Black. Heat set it with a Hair dryer bent the lure rubbed my finger on it etc ..... and the paint stuck very well. Long Term I Cant say but short term it seemed to work.

5    Waited a day. Next day I Cleared it by dipping in BaitJunkys Brand Plastisol degassed

6    Then i flexed it nothing cracked bent chipped nor did the clear coat dip come off.

But I do agree i may need to experiment more but ill fiond a way to show my results to get everyone's opinion.

Now whether this works for mass production or not is not the reason for trying this at the moment. I simply enjoy painting Hard crank baits and am starting to carry over that idea to plastic, without having to buy different paint products. I suppose getting the Ispike-it water based paint for plastic is no big deal and certainly can be used and in fact I have some. But I was experimenting and at this time don't see an issue in the short term.

As said, it does not matter what you do or what paint you are using, if it isn't the SB Coat/VPI or the Colure Coat2O then it will not properly adhere/bond to the plastic.

I to am struggling to see how this is a game changer, the color palette offered in the proper paints is great and you can mix custom colors as well as add pearls/hilites to clear etc, I have seen some absolutely stunning work done to soft baits that could/would give the best hard bait painters a run for their money.

At this time The createx is sticking to the soft Plastic. In the photos you can see the paint I used. Its not Cracking or Pulling away.

Again I am just experimenting here and appreciate the comments. These are the results Im getting. I did not use Heat Stabalizer just straight up Bait Junkys from the jug.

I will attempt to do a video to further show everyone what I see on my end.

Im just doing this for fun/Hobby

Jim, Thanks for posting this topic and pictures. Looks good to me and yes I agree the paint is sticking and not cracking or peeling like some suggested. You may be onto something here, keep up the great work and by the responses you may have started something. LOL

Thanks again, have a great weekend.

Some of you guys think this is the first time this has been talked about or even been done. If it works so well why did Spikeit go through all the r&d to develope a safer waterbased paint. I know the vpi paint is way better but the smell that goes with it is a bit much for me. Time will tell and like all the other times this will go away. I painted next to Ken Huddleston at icast a couple of years ago and I think we had ten colors of water based paint and I will tell you he can make some pretty nice looking stuff with a limited palate. He has always used the solvent paint so it was new to him too.

Spike-it makes the best plastic paint I.M.O. & experience. I manufacture and air-brush 1000's of swim-baits each year. I prefer solvent base and I believe Frank prefers non- solvent paint from Spike-it.. Solvent base dries in a few minutes w/ no smell afterwards and is exteremly durable w/ out dipping in clear. Solvent base paint requires a good exhaust system-usually  in a spray booth. A 3-m organic respirator is recommended for long term, mixing & spraying.
