Does Heat Stabilizer Prevent Clear Plastic From Yellowing Sooner?

Recommended Posts

I make many clear or translucent baits and reuse plastic over and over. Essential plastisol seems to yellow (brown) faster than other plastics so I was wondering about buying a jug of stabilizer.

As you can see from the dark core lures, they all start out using clear plastic. Preventing yellowing after five or six reheats allows the core to be seen best. As you can see, the one set of grubs was poured with yellowed plastic- still translucent enough, but not ideal even after dipping the lures in Spike-IT. I keep temps below 300 for any bait I pour to enable more reheats.

I'm no expert.... I believe the stabilizer helps SOME..... but from my experience - the it's the reheats that seem to yellow much faster.  If I'm pouring a opaque bait - I'll throw the sprues right back into the pot/cup after I empty the mold - but with smoke/clear I found this just yellows the whole pot ALOT faster... My guess is after each reheat whatever is burning off is gone - and while the stabilizer helps - I don't think it replenishes everything.

It's hard keepin clear plastic from not turning yellow especially when reheating in micro . The heat stabilizer will help with that but i have found keepin ur heated pyrex cups on hot plate works for me. The plastic doesnt have to deal with that shock from micro every few minutes.when usin a micro always heat ur plastic up in short burst stir and take temp with infrared therm. Heating in pyrex cup u get hot spots in plastic

Heat stabilizer can help but it won't stop yellowing altogether. I like to reheat sprues with some uncooked plastic. Seems to helps get more reheats and less yellowing. And as has already been mentioned, reheat in short bursts and stir often to maintain a consistent tempature in the mix
