Hook Weights

Recommended Posts

does anyone know where to find the weight of different size treble hooks online? I can weigh and compare the hooks I have but it would be nice to know a hooks weight before buying them...I have emailed a couple "hook" folks and haven't received any information back...

I appreciate any leads you may have..

Bob...do you know if there is a difference in weight between a black nickel & bronze hook?

I bought some Vmc short shank BN#2's and was surprised that they were just as heavy as anything else I had on hand...i guess I thought the shorter shank would equate to being lighter.

VMC's wire seems pretty thick on average, in whatever style.  If you want thinner lighter wire hooks I think you have to take a look at Japanese brands like Owner.  The Japanese tend to use harder tempering which produces a treble with finer wire but equivalent strength (and more durable sharpness with easier penetration).  When stressed to the max, they tend to break instead of bend, but that happens very rarely.  I build baits for myself and family/friends.  I mostly use Gamakatsu and Mustad KVD short shanks on most of my personal baits and VMC on the baits I give away because of the cost difference.  Nothing wrong with VMC, I just prefer the extended sharpness of the Japanese brands.

Honestly, we're talking about a hundredth of an ounce difference between a #4 treble hook between brands.  That's only consequential for suspending jerkbaits.  I build my baits to a targeted finished weight that includes whatever treble hooks I've decided to use, so it's really not an issue.

I've always found it interesting how much more precise the Japanese are with their hardbaits compare to the US. Anyway, unless someone has a good selection an scale (wouldn't that be nice if Shorty's measured their weights?) you need to look at Japan.

Another thing to think of, is that manufacturers don't always keep the same proportions in different hook sizes. For example I know some of Gamakatsu's heavy duty hooks not only have stronger wire, but a sharper bend. It's stronger but also negatively effects hook gape.

VMC has a chart that doesn't show hook weight, but shows what their pro staff anglers recommend as replacement VMC hooks for various models of Rapala. This just made me wonder why they don't put that hook on there originally?? I'm sure cost and perhaps a more universal action...

Hope This a Helps,

Craig
