Glitter - Need Advice

Hi Guys,

Learnt the hard way today that not all glitters are equal.  Went to mix up a batch of watermelon red flake and as soon as I added the red glitter the colour bled out and turned my watermelon plastic into a horrible red shade. Also left the glitter silver.  The plastic was at the right temp and not too hot. I tried to save it but had to throw out. So....... my question is, can anyone recommend a good quality glitter that will withstand the heat. If I order from the US (I'm in AUS) I need to know it will work as shipping charges are astronomical!  Thanks.

Any of the suppliers over here are selling proper poly glitter. Check with BaitJunkys, Spike-It, LureCraft etc. They all work well.

1st, dont throw the plastic away, u can always make it black... i had alot of black when i first started

2nd, DaveMc is right, all the plastisol suppliers sell hi temp glitter.... but some colors are still prone to bleeding.... be wary of any purples, and ive had issues w some shades of green

I have some fine black, blue and red glitter that I purchased from a plastics supplier here in AUS that are OK.  But the range is limited in sizes. The glitter I used that bled was a US brand - American Crafts Brand WOW glitter from the local craft store.  It was the first time I've used it and I have 3 other colours.  Won't risk using it anymore.

Best to stay away from the craft crap, only a couple will work according to a few people. Stick to the glitter sold by the plastic suppliers, it works!!! Purples do tend to bleed but if you get Grape (or dark grape) you won't have any bleeding problems.

In a pinch Stampendous brand glitters have always performed with no issues for me going on over a dozen years now.   Sizes are limited (fine, extra fine, and medium) but they have a wide array of glitters and also some mica powders that can give some interesting results.   Found several online sources in AUS that carry it.  Cost is more expensive per amount however and in the long run buying larger quantities from soft plastic lure suppliers better option.

Thanks for the advice guys. I might look into the Stampendous glitter Travis if its available in AUS. I looked at spike-it site.  Put 5 x 2oz colours in the shopping cart $17.25US + $97.03 shipping!  This is the problem I have ordering anything from Australia.  The shipping costs are astronomical.

I had exactly the same problem a few years ago, and Baitjunky's high temp glitter was the key.  Leonard actually PM'd me and suggest it, and it's been great.

Even the big boys run into problems sometimes.  I have a pegboard hook full of Zoom watermelon red worms that all look a translucent brown after a couple years on the wall.

HMMMMMM, I've blown through 10-12lbs of .015 Grape and almost 18lbs of .035 Grape from the same place, plenty of smoke colours without a single bleeding issue. 

 

These aren't the best images available out there but the best I could really do. the first 2 are a dark smoke with .015 and .035 Grape and the 3rd is a light smoke with .015 Grape. Like I said, I use a lot of this particular glitter and have yet to have an issue with it bleeding. (.015 Gold is another that I have found will bleed, most notably in smoke colours giving it a green tint and Spike-It's Golds have been very stable in that regard)

I was using Del-Mart .015 and .035 red glitter that is at least ten years old.

I have sourced most of my soft plastic materials from u-make-em Edgecrusher.  I do have some glitter from them which is OK.  I have red, but was sent a much larger size (approx 1.5mm) than the fine (0.008") that I ordered because they didn't have any at the time.  It is of no use to me. I need 0.015" red for the lures I want to make and u-make-em don't stock this size.  They only seem to carry a 'coarse' or 'fine'.

 

I've just placed an order for some polyester glitter from The Glitter Shop in the UK. $11.39 AUS shipping.  Much cheaper than US shipping costs and almost the same as shipping here at home.

Iv used theres as well i find there colours do bleed when do you put the glitter in at what stage i do mine just before i inject

  Thats what I have been doing....adding before I inject.

Hi dotiften I put in when hot, haven't noticed bleed from them but I moved onto other suppliers once I was using larger quantities they may have changed in the two years since I bought there.

The only red I ever had bleed was senkosams and that was only on reheats.
