Laminate Issue

Recommended Posts

The goal is to make a 2 color single tail grub from a 4 cavity injection mold (center sprue 2 baits each side) - but the darker color needs to be on top of the bait. what I get is usually a laminate with colors on the sides of the grub in lieu of top/bottom. If I turn the Twinjector 90 degrees, half the grubs are 100% dark and half of them light.

Suggestions are most welcome.

You can't do a top/bottom laminate on a grub. It's always gonna be the sides if you rig the grub with the tail up or down. If you rig it sideways bam, top bottom laminate. You'd need a top inject mold same as you would with a swimbait because of how they have to be oriented in the mold.

Right here. Single cavity top or side inject is the only way you can do this. There are large multi cavity production molds that are capable of laminating belly/back with the cavities on their sides but the runner system is rather nuts, and they aren't without their own set of problems (I also imagine they are far more expensive than standard production molds as well)

I love a laminated grub in Tennessee shad that I think was an old Gene Larew bait.  It has half dark smoke, half pearl white, and the only way I found to get the smoke on top was to rig the grub flat, so the tail sits horizontal, instead of facing up or down.

It catches fish, and doesn't foul any more than the top or bottom rigging fouls.

should you want to take the time, shoot, demold and cut the grub, put the piece or pieces back in the cavities and shoot with the second color keeping the gate open. Real PIA.

I had considered doing that with a swimbait mold I had....considered it for about 10 seconds and immediately realized it wasn't worth the time and effort haha!
