What Mark said :yay:.    I trace around a factory lure and mark the angle of the diving bill then cut out the blank and the diving lip slot...works pretty well so far.   Its been interesting playing around with the angle, shape and size of a diving lip to see how it changes the action of a particular lure body.

X3.  There aren't many easy answers as far as crankbait design goes.  Lip angle is a case in point.  I think most of us amateur builders start with a commercial crankbait that we like, copy it, and from there tweak later baits to get differences in the performance that we want.  Changes in lip design and angle from one iteration to another?  You could write reams of rules, theories, trial results, etc - and a lot of them have been discussed here in past threads.
