chachybaby 7
Can someone please recommend the model motor they are using on their presto pot stirring system. How many rpm etc. Pictures are welcome. Also how you are connecting stir rod to the motor. Thanks
Travis 618
I believe when I built mine I used the AC Face Mount Gear motor https://www.mcmaster.com/ac-motors/face-mount-compact-ac-gearmotors/ Believe it is the 20 rpm, 25 torque model and jsut use a shaft coupler to connect motor to stir rod. https://www.mcmaster.com/shaft-couplers/set-screw-shaft-couplings/
chachybaby 7
Thanks! So looks like rpm wise 20 to 25 is ideal from reading posts. Can anybody else share what model motor they are using.

There are some folks that have used stepper motors as well.
chachybaby 7
Thanks guys. Would this motor work? It's a 60 rpm gear.motor ..I'm not sure what specs to look for. https://www.grainger.ca/en/product/GEARMOTOR-60-RPM-AC/p/DMD2Z829
Apdriver 556
Nice price but you have to be careful how fast you spin your paddles. Too fast and you will incorporate bunches of bubbles or throw your plastic right out of the pot.
chachybaby 7
Thanks Apdriver. Is there a way to slow it down with that motor? Sorry for the stupid questions.
Apdriver 556
From what I understand, some ac motors you can but some you can’t. They do make speed controls for ac motors, though. Looking at the specs, it’s a split capacitor ac motor and not a good candidate from what I can tell just by some online references. Why don’t you send Baitjunky an IM and ask him what he used when he made some for resale. I don’t think he makes them anymore so he would possibly share that information. He’s a member here but not sure how often he visits.
chachybaby 7
Thanks will do. Appreciate your guidance on this.
Travis 618
I looked the other day and mine is the 20 RPM model from McMaster Carr. Never had any issues for over 10 years now. Several threads on the site from long ago with other parameters. Depending on how much plastic you are doing at once may want more torque when you are passing the phase transitions from liquid to "solid" to liquid.

chachybaby 7
What about this one? Seems most comparable to the McMaster model you mentioned https://www.grainger.ca/en/product/AC-GEARMOTOR%2C25-RPM%2COPEN%2C115V/p/DMD52JE30

McMaster is already wired and has a fan but imagine the shipping to Toronto area is the catch.
chachybaby 7
Thanks Travis. Yes exactly looking for something local which I can pick up. So from what I gather. Rpm: 20 to 25 Single phase, not split capacitor? Torque: above 20lbs? Amount of plastic at one time, I am not sure yet as I want a motor which could handle lower to high amounts. There seems to be alot of variables here which I must consider in the set up.
chachybaby 7
I have someone local selling this model gearmotor Molon Z80U. Wondering if anyone has come across it. Can't find any specs online. He says runs about 45 rpm at gearbox. https://www.kijiji.ca/v-other-business-industrial/st-catharines/gearmotor/1497134224
bryanmc 193
Looking at the picture, the output shaft is on the wrong side of the gearbox. Aside from that, without knowing the specs, or if you could switch the output it's really a crapshoot.

chachybaby 7
Would this worm gearmotor work? 20 rpm high torque. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01M27TFBO/ref=sspa_mw_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B01M702U6C&pd_rd_w=QZ7fx&pf_rd_p=7d088b91-6713-4853-934e-8bffcfaf92e2&pd_rd_wg=R2s1U&pf_rd_r=S1GCSDA1BWWD99FPT74N&pd_rd_r=bd9f6fc4-5980-418c-877b-d7261f961b1e&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExOEZCOEhMMlIxWFJaJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTcxODk4OURONFM5SExGWkc1JmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAzMjg1NjUySTkwTlgwVzRPR1k3JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfcGhvbmVfZGV0YWlsX3RoZW1hdGljJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=
bryanmc 193
We've told you what is known to work. Anything else is a gamble on your part. You may save a couple bucks or you may waste the purchase price trying to save a couple bucks.

chachybaby 7
Just seems like I have one option here to go with the mcmaster model. Or try to understand the stepper motor option which seems to need a controller. Agree I don't want to gamble on something which isn't going to work which is why I am asking if there are alternatives which I can purchase closer to home. I'll keep searching the forum. Frank 619
Most people just take the advice and buy what works. There are other options but not at that price. Not saying that model does not have issues as well. But most of those can be solved easily. Buy that one and be happy. Buy the others and let us know if they work out.
chachybaby 7
Agree. Dont feel like playing trial and error over it.. I'll try to get that model sent over to my area if not crazy expensive for shipping. If not will let you guys know another model I pursue. Thanks for the honest opinions. SlowFISH 173
McMaster has some of the most reasonable shipping costs out there... I order for them all the time.... granted - they have a warehouse about 60 miles away - but there is no excess charged on their behalf that I notice.... most items I order show up in a rather large box for 7-10 dollars.... granted over the boarder will likely cost more... but they seem to only charge what they have to pay UPS/Fed Ex.... no surcharges in my experience.
