overkill
Has anyone tried putting a diving lip on a popper? I have been thinking about this for a while. My thoughts are that it might give a wild erratic action. Although it might not be great for casting I thought it has the potential to be awesome for trolling, maybe even saltwater? let me know if any of you have tried it
kellure
It would case a ruckus on the surface, would no doubt work around some schoolers.
Mallard
You don't need a diving lip to make a popper dive. If you weight it just right, usually chin weighted, you can get it to lay flat in the water and pop but also dive head down when retrieved. If you shape the top of the head right and place the line tie in the right place it will swim with an erratic wobble, but it takes a lot work. And you are right, they are great for saltwater, and you can make them heavy so they cast a mile. Here is a commercial version of what you are describing: http://www.traderbay.com/northshore.html I have about six 2" swimming poppers on my workbench know. They pop and swim like crazy...until I add hooks I am trying to make this discountinued product. http://secure.cartsvr.net/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=1549550&showprevnext=
the-bass-catcher
Go with what Mallard said as far as a popper that swims as well as pops. I've had times when I've tied a popper to lines that sink and get caught in submerged vegetation, which makes a regular popper dive underwater, but not a really good wobbling action, just a slight roll from side to side.
