crankbait lip design -what do you think?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

What a great site! I?ve got a question for you crankbait specialists?

I recently bought a couple great looking (size, shape and finish) but cheap super-shallow cranks from one of the big catalog houses. Well as you might guess they don't run too well. They have a very weak action. I'd really like a good shaker for bouncing around in shallow cover. At present the darn things scarcely wiggle.

I noticed all the super-shallow fat plugs I have (Storm, Dance, Bomber, Bagley, Mann, Rebel) all sport rounded lips. This particular plug has a large, wide, square lip. If I rounded it might I get more wobble? What do you think?

Upon further inspection, the other super-shallow cranks I have I am starting to think the problem may be the angle of the lip. It is very nearly 90degrees on this plug. The others all have a shallower angle. It may be a hassle but I may attempt to cut off the lip and reset it at a different angle. The lip is by far the longest of any shallow crank I have so I might have enough to work with.

What do you think? Would changing the lip shape add any wiggle? Or kill it further? How about lip angle?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Well I started playing with them a bit and found I could get decent action by pulling the knot down to the underside of the line tie. Will have to put a spot of epoxy, or something, onto the center of the line tie to keep the knot from slipping up. I may not have to do any cutting and pasting at all.

I just read on an old rapala minnow package that if you bend the line tie downwards, it will have more wobble, and if upwards, less. I know your bait's shape is dramatically different, but maybe if the linetie is bendable stainless steel, or even better, brass, you might wanna give this a try! If not, your solution seems very practical as well.
