Smallmouth Colors

Recommended Posts

Just came back from WI and the lake I fished for smallies was so clear you could see a pebble 40ft down and the fish at 25-30ft.

I tried all kinds of colors as you could imagine.

By far and away, the best colors were watermelon/red flake, watermelon pepper, green pumpkin/red flake and salt and pepper (smoke/black flake)

The best baits were: Sticks, zippers and beavers with the bigger fish coming on 5' sticks of watermelon and salt and pepper but more fish on zippers.

Good luck!!!!!

I also talked with some guys that were ripping them up on the drop shot rig. They were using little 2 1/2" reapers...

Mostly in green pumpkin/purple flake and motor oil/red flake...

Jim

BTW: I have some REAL nice spider jigs (Thanks Softworm) and I happen to know a guy that pours zippers if you need either :D !!!!

I noticed that no one mentioned light smoke/black pepper over clear with hologramic.

This is a bait that I use quite a lot to match the local baits fish.

You should check out what the local forage fishes are in the lake you're talking about, then research them on the net for pics; match the colors and away you go.

Bassn1 our local lake is crystal clear and deeeeeeeeeeep!!!! We've been doing prettygood with 3in. craws salt and pepper with chart. claws. Also been catching fish with the 1/8 oz spider jigs with a paddle tail worm as a trailer, cherryseed color. Green pumpkin and rootbeer pepper green is good colors to use also, tip the claws with a little chart. smallmouth seems to like this at this time of year. Oh we have been fishing at night, can't stand the 90 deg. days!!!!!!!!!

In clear, natural northern smallmouth lakes, there are only 2 colors you need when fishing tubes...

Green pumpkin with copper/orange flake (excellent northern craw mimic)

Watermelon w/ small gold flake (good emerald shiner mimic)

Keep your smallie fishing simple - everything else is just dead weight. :)

Thanks for the help on the smallmouth colors. I did manage to take 2nd place. The fish were not bitting to well today (major cold front, 40's for morning temps) I got just under 15 lbs on 5 fish with a 4.83 LM kicker. All on my hand poured stix. Is it worth it to pour your own? You bet it is !!! Glad I found this site and got bit by the plastic bug!!
