Making Flat Crankbaits

Recommended Posts

Hey all..... First, I am a newbie and just wanted to say hi! Anyway, I love fishing with flat crankbaits like the little petey. I would also love to start making my own plugs similar to the little petey style baits. I was wondering if anybody could give me some tips about how to run the wire harness through the bait. Is this necessary? If anybody could help me get started I would really appreciate it. Thanks

JMC,

The schematic is set up for line tie inserts instead of thruwire. The colored lines are listed below. The weighting will change depending on what size you make the lure

You can resize to whatever size you would like the different color lines are for:

Blue line= angle of the lip slot

first red line = the depth of the lip slot cut

second red line = the location of the bellyweight

the green lines = are used to drill the line tie and the rear hook hanger the green lines are perpindiculars (right angles so that when you place the bait in a vise to drill the line tie and rear hook hanger are placed perfectly

That should get you started in the right direction. The search button will help tremendously. If there's any q's you can't find answer to just ask. I'm sure someone will chime in to help.

Thru wire is best on balsa baits but not essential. I never use it on hardwood baits. You can make a balsa bait that holds up for bass fishing without it if you use a sufficiently long line tie and hook hangers (1") and epoxy them in well. For thru wire, I scribe a center line around the "square" rough blank before sanding. After the bait is in its final shape, split it in half along the line with a razor blade. fit in the wire frame and epoxy it back together with 5 min epoxy.
