sealing and painting

Recommended Posts

If you are shooting lacquer paint then you can use epoxy as a sealer. Water based paint does not consistantly stick to epoxy. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it won't. Most of the time, it won't. I use polyurathane like Coley. Minwax make a thin quick drying polyurathane that has worked for me real well. It is not as thick as regular polyurathane and does not need to be stirred before using it. You can get it anywhere. It comes in a silver wrapped can.

It depends on what kind of wood you're using. IMO, soft balsa needs epoxy to prime and reinforce the wood. Hardwoods don't need reinforcement, just a primer to keep the grain from raising when painted with water based acrylics. Thinned epoxy works well but takes time to cure. I use cellulose propionate pellets or plastic cups disolved in acetone because it dries quickly. But any oil based primer, polyurethane, etc will do.
