Anyone use Spike-it dips

Recommended Posts

I did a search and found some info but it was awhile ago and hopefully more will weigh in on the topic, with either good or not so good results.

Has anyone used Spike-it dips at all? I'm curious to try it for tails only.. would certainly save me a bunch of time in having to pour a different color tail when I could just dip it.

Thank you in advance. Not many posts from me.. but I read all of the posts and have found a wealth of information here.

I use the spike it dye and use it like crazy, what I do so I dont spill any. I use plano 3700 box will hold 12 or so bottles real good. I open the bottle and leave it in the box and dip that way. So if you do spill it goes in the box and not in the boat. You can remove the stuff from carpet, but not the seats. Spike sells stuff called neutrilizer it will take it out of the carpet but you have to treat it right away.

I actually know the guy that started Spike-it and still owns the company...Amazing what a chemistry degree and the love for bass fishing will get you!!!

The stuff is great (except for carpet). The chartreuse is real good but the blue is really AWESOME and hot right now!!!!

I like the garlic flavored myself!!!! The fish seem to like it too.

i have used it for years. half the time i had other guys borrowing one of my bottles. my friend jim always would spill chartreuse on his gray carpet and come find me at the end of the tourny for the neutralizer, i dont thin i used it once, lol. but the neutralizer does work if you use it within a few hours of the spill.

I saw a good friendship broken over a bottle of spike-it. The guest in this incident kept spilling spike-it on the upholstry of the boat. After the second day of this, the owner of the boat told his guest to put that *!@(* stuff back in the tackle box and don't get it out again!

I guess what I am trying to say, is don't get that on your buddy's boat, or he may not be your buddy any more.

Ive used many bottles of the Spike It. One thing to remeber is it is an acid base and literally etches or eats into the plastic. If you are dipping tube tails is to make sure all the little slivers (the slivers will dissolve) of the tail are removed and have a piece of card board ready to brush the wet tail "up and down/left and right" while the dye is drying. If not the tail strands will glue themselves together and you will have a mess.

Also try not to leave the bottle open for no longer than is necessary. It will evaporate and as it evaporates the pigment will be left and it will become concentrated. My best bit of advice is if you are going to use it in a boat set up a compartment in a tackle box and attach velcro in the bottom of the compartment and onto the bottom of the bottles.

Never even think about using it in a boat unless you have the neutralizer.

I also dip clear tails, however the first time I was a bit disappointed with the chartruese. I thought it was suppose to make a solid color.. however I was definately happy with the catching results. The tail looks like a transparent neon chartruese and it has produced results for me on the open flats with speckled trout.

I made an order for a couple more colors and looking forward to trying them out.

It is great stuff but do get the neutralizer at the same time. I pour almost all of my baits with clear tails because I always dip them
