Weighted Worm Hooks.

Recommended Posts

Im using Storm Suspend Strips to weight the shanks of worm hooks. I consider them to be a bit expensive and im looking for an alternative. I thought about using lead wire but would think it might be just as expensive as the suspend strips. Also it might be hard to find it in the right diameter size.

I need anywhere from .022 to .024 diameter sizes.

Im thinking about trying to come up with a way to make lead sheeting to cut into 1/16 inch wide strips. I might get two pieces of steel angle and bend the top edges outward in a similar manner to the gate on a jig mold. I could shim them to the desired thickness of the lead sheeting and then pour into it from my lead pot.

Has anyone tried this or does someone have a better idea?

I use a Do-It Lure Body Mold. Place your hook in it and squeeze it in a vise just enough to make an impression of the hook wire. Do not squeeze it to hard or you will warp the hinges or worse. then take a Dremel with a cutting disk and cut this impression on both sides just deep enough so the mold will close completely. I make a nice little weighted worm hook with a 1/0 mustad 30

Another idea that I use on suspending jerkbaits rather than the expensive dots is regular solder. I keep a few inches in my tackle box and when needed to get the jerkbait to hold a depth rather than floating slowly toward the surface, I would pinch off a small piece and wrap it around the belly hook eye. Works like a champ. May be able to apply in your situation.
