How do you tie a jig with silicone bands?

Recommended Posts

Bassky,

If you are using the silicone bands, it is easier for me to place all the skirt layers in the band first and then place it all on the jig head. If it is a jighead with a rattle, you really have to stretch the band to get it over the rattle. After the skirt is in place on the jig head, I adjust the skirt strands around to get them evenly spaced and to get the color placement that I want. One of the skirt tools available on the market sure helps with this task. If you have a lot on patience and only a few jigs to do, you can get by with needle nose pliers to expand the band. If you attach the skirt with something other than the silicone band, search this site for hand tying, lots has been written on how to do this.

Hey Bassky,

The best way to tie a jig or spinnerbait is to buy the rubber skirt strips ( not sure what they are called but are about 3/4 inch wide and look like they are uncut on each end). Double the strip over on itself and cut with scissors directly in the middle. You should have two identical pieces of skirt material now. Attach to the jig or spinnerbait as you would tie a fly. Use 3 skirt pieces for spinnerbaits (anymore and it will reduce feel of bait) and 4 for jigs. Best place I have found to buy the skirts is staminainc.com. Look under skirt building materials Silicone. This is what I use. If I have totally confused you send me a PM and I can walk you through it.

CHEAP AND SLICK..............

Pull the inside ink tube out of a Bic pen (the ink tube) which leaves you a clear hollow tube like peice that is tapered at one end........Roll how ever many bans you want onto the tapered end and slide them up about an inch from the bigger end of the pen.......take your skirt matieral how ever many strands and colors and/or strips and stick them into the big end opening about an inch is all you need, when you get the desired skirt you want simply slide the ban off onto you strands. Remove it from the pen and adjust your ban anywhere you need on the strands...........They make tools to do this BUT this works the same as them and is a whole lot cheaper, you can do this same thing with bulk weedgaurd matieral also, making your own blends of colors and strength then use a soldering gun to melt the ends together. Have fun.............:yay:

Personally I wire ALL my skirts on MY private jigs it takes alittle more time BUT they don't slide down on you, NEVER ! ! ! ! ! but sometimes I have to put skirt on with a ban and even it out around the jig and wire tie it, then cut the band off. Companies use the bands because they are fast and easy.

I have had problems with the little bands breaking off in my tackle box. Makes a mell of a hess!!! I finally started using the bands to make the skirts and put them on the jigs, or spinnerbaits, and then, using heavy rod winding thread, tie the skirt down. I use a fly tying vise to hold the jig. This way I can add accent colors where I want them, etc. etc. and they never come apart. I do coat the thread with head cement when tied. Clear as mud at this point?:nono: Any further questions?
