Printers Lead

Recommended Posts

Ok, guys I need some info. Someone ,somewhere knows what I'm talking about, I don't... I have a guy that used to be a printer. He told me he has a lot of lead type. I can get 400lbs for .20/lb. He told me some of it's real soft, and some of it's harder. I know nothing about pinters lead type. Is this stuff any good to use for pouring jigs? Any and all help would be much appreciated.............Thanks Ted

Cadman, Thats a good price for lead. Sure as printers or linotype lead its going to have its impurities. Do you have an ingot iron (casting tray). If you can melt it once take the dross and crap off and then cast it into ingots you will have pretty good lead remaining which can be quickly melted again and poured into good products. The secret of doing it is to have a pretty good heat source and not to just melt it but keep it heated and held at melting point for quite a while. That way most of what you want separated out actually gets separated out and rises to the top to be taken out with the dross. Like I said the answer is to have a pretty good heat source which is cheap to run. A large rendering pot or good drum out in the country heated overnight with a good hardwood fire and a decent trivet is the way to go but remember if you do it this way to remove and take everything away with you. You dont want to contaminate anything and even the dross should go in a good landfill.

Cadman, Hair U R, Knock and it shall be opened unto you, Read and Ye shall learn.

No its actually a very good source of info and you should find educational. Note the different melting points of each metal and if you read and digest properly you will be able to make better Jigheads than you would have been able to otherwise make.

Thanks guys, I will do a test pour from him before I buy the whole lot. I know this is an excellent price. but I like to work with soft lead.

Dungeonhawk, I will PM you on some other issues in about a week, kind of busy now. Anyway. I always buy plumbers lead. The best price I found around here is $1.90/lb. I don't know about anybody elses lead, so I can't say. You can buy the plumbers lead from a plumbers warehouse. It is 99.999999% pure so I'm told. I have never had any problems with it. I use beeswax with my lead. Any candle wax will do. I can't say if it pours any better, but I use it and it works. So do what you will. I also don't smoke my molds. It works for me and I don't have any problems...............Ted
