Lip slot

Recommended Posts

This may be a dumb rookie question, but do most of you cut ur lip slots in wooden baits before you shape them? On my first one I cut it after I had carved it (the last step) and I am not sure it turned out so well. I saw in Fatfingers paint booth pics it looked like he had the slot cut in the wooden cut out in his booth pic.

I cut the slot after I do the side profile but the sides are still square. Then I shape the blank and complete the slot for the lip. I also glue in the bill before the lure is painted, but i seal the lure before i glue the lip in so that is is easier to sand the sealer(devcon) to get smooth. Then i glue the lip and eyescrews in. Then i fill any gaps with wood filler and get as smooth as i can before i prime.
