Re: Big Worms

Ah goin big! I love the big stuff man!

Not much can beat Bass Pro Shops selection of huge worms. Cheap, good colors, consistent. Shape and action isn't as important with big worms. You aren't trying to tease the fish to eat like you do with a drop shot rig, you are trying to present a big meal to a fish. For big worms, brands and all that isn't really important, just find a big worm with good color selection.

I really like a purple worm, DARK purple with a little flake. Green Pumpkin is a great color, but by far solid Black is the best producer for me over here in the west. You are going to want to go with a REALLY big hook for these baits, try 3/0-7/0. No need to be subtle! Also, go big with the weights. 1/2 oz would really be a minimum weight. I like to use a big 1 oz sinker for nearly all situations. I can get a far cast to catch the skittish giants and I can hold bottom well.

Rigging is all up to you. I like carolina rigs the most because I can cover water pretty well and because bigger worms look better when they glide above. If you have a fish follow your bait, but not eat it, try using a Texas rig and use lots of tiny hops. NOW you would try and tease em into eating.

Don't try the Optimum swimbaits, they are a joke. If you want to try swimbaits, try some California Swimbabes or Mattlures. A flipping stick can handle these baits easily and they will get good bites!

Hope that cleared up your question. Now is the best time to try big wormin!
