handle building question

Hey guys just me again. If any of you have read my previous posts you will know that I am working on that float rod. Thank you once again for the great responses. The blank is looking good. I am at the point where I want to start to glue some cork rings together and turn a handle for this rod. I have built handles in the past however I would like to put a checker board pattern in a few spots. I have tried different home made jigs and I have even tried measuring and cutting by hand with no sucsess. Do any of you guys have any suggestions on how to make this pattern and make it look good. Thanks once again for the relpies. Mark
